I'm not just talking about the Disney movie either.
I guess I never realized it, because Secretariat was before my time, but.. He was probably the most amazing and impressive horse that ever lived. Other horses have won the triple crown, sure, but Secretariat broke every single track record, and 28 years later one horse managed to approach his record at the Kentucky Derby.
His races were all impressive, but none even come close to his win at the Belmont Stakes. No horse should be able to keep the kind of pace Secretariat kept.
It's unreal. He ended 31 lengths in front of Sham.
He ran the entire one and a half mile track in 2:24. This means he was running an average of 37 mph through the WHOLE race, and no horse has broken his record in nearly 40 years.
After he died, his necropsy revealed that his heart was nearly double the size of that of an average horse.. A genetic trait that is passed from mothers to her sons. This is almost certainly why he could run the way he ran.
Anyway.. seriously watch that video. If you've ever seen a horse race before, especially at the long distance Belmont track, you know that this sort of thing is NOT normal.
It fascinates me. Truly.
[This thread is entirely useless, and it's basically me shitting myself about how impressive this horse is.. or was, really. At any rate, the video is worth watching if this was TL;DR]
